Out of the Classroom and into CRE

Out of the Classroom and into CRE

Jesse King

With my first 90 days in the commercial real estate world soon approaching, I found myself realizing the similarities between the CRE industry and my previous role in education. Below are some of those thoughts that I find most insightful and impactful to my success looking forward.

  1. The soft skills I developed through teaching play a big role in CRE. Communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership are just a handful of the skills that teaching imparts upon those who work in education. Whether you’re coming up with lesson plans that target all learning types in the classroom or looking at all the determining factors to see if a property will be the right fit for your group, the soft skills are applicable to both scenarios.
  1. You’ve got to find the right team. To quote the mighty Michael Jordan, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships”. While MJ and I might be competing for different “championships” the sentiment remains the same. I had a great support team at my job in education, and I’ve been blessed to find a great team at First Capital Property Group. We work well as a unit and each person has the skills and wherewithal to prevail over any obstacle that comes our way.
  1. Commercial real estate, like education, is about building relationships. As an astute teacher builds relationship with each student to bring out the best of them, so must one do in the CRE world to be successful. Relationships born out of respect, trust, understanding are those that bring about successful and mutually beneficial deals. You cannot take shortcuts and expect to succeed long term.

I value these lessons learned from my first 90 days and I’m looking forward to my future in CRE at First Capital Property Group.
